Testimonials from great jazz pianists!

George Duke

"I had the chance to install the piano and I must say that though I didn't spend but an hour playing around with it, I really believe you have something special here!"  George Duke - Grammy winning Keyboardist/Producer/Composer - Frank Zappa, Cannonball Adderly, Stanley Clarke, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita Baker, Natalie Cole, The Pointer Sisters, Al Jarreau. Soul Train.

Russell Ferrante

"The Blüthner piano is the most dynamically responsive sampled piano I've encountered. The detailed sampling at the lowest velocities allow a level of expression that makes it uniquely satisfying to play." - Russell Ferrante - Yellowjackets Grammy winning Keyboardist/Producer/Arranger - Bobby McFerrin, Take 6, Robben Ford, GRP Big Band, Lee Ritenour, Brenda Russell, Joni Mitchell.

Jay Graydon

"I have experimented with many piano plugins over the years. After experimenting with the Blüthner, I quickly realized the piano has depth unlike any other used to date! Finally a piano that sounds great on its own for solo stuff, great for vocal and piano songs, great for jazz, and great for commercial music of all styles! Clearly a plugin that can be used by all!" Jay Graydon - Grammy winning Producer/Songwriter/Guitarist - David Foster, Earth Wind & Fire, George Benson, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Cher, Cheap Trick, Hall and Oates.

Don Grusin

"The Blüthner piano has realism and playability that surpasses all the other wannabees. I’m happy."  Don Grusin - Grammy winning pianist/keyboardist, composer, producer, arranger, and songwriter - Friendship, Lee Ritenour, Patti Austin, Oscar Castro-Neves, Dave Grusin, Ernie Watts.

David Arivett

"Having once owned a 7 ft. Bluthner Grand made me a genuine lover of the incredible tonal beauty from this manufacturer of pianos! So when I first heard the demos for the Bluthner Digital Model One I was totally blown away by the tone and overall realism! Once I installed the software on my computer I quickly realized that I now was the owner of not just one but countless Bluthner Grand's (because of the variety and versatility of choices/settings provided with the software plug-in) Simply amazing!"- David Arivett - Pianist/Composer/Producer/Arranger

Oscar Castro-Neves

"I’ve been an arranger/composer for quite a long time. But, for even a longer period I am a music lover and the sound of an orchestra is something that immediately fires my heart and inspires me to keep on striving to write and create, hopefully, meaningful pieces.

"I’ve been using Dan Dean's wonderful library of instruments for quite a while. But nothing compares what he and Ernest Cholakis have done with the Dan Dean Solo Strings Advanced and the Blüthner Digital Model One Grand Piano.

"The warmth, the clarity and the realistic response of the instruments instantly draw your attention to the music, because the listening experience is one of listening to live, real instruments.

"When I am orchestrating I reach first for their libraries. And, most likely not even look for anything else. The beauty is already there. Thanks Dan and Ernest" Oscar Castro-Neves - Guitarist/Orchestrator/Composer - Antonio Carlos Jobim, Yo-Yo Ma, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, numerous films and TV programs.

"Rather than sample yet another Steinway or Böesendorfer piano, Ernest and Dan have instead opted for a Blüthner Model One, and the Digital Model One is actually an officially licensed product of the Blüthner company. Although the Blüthner name is perhaps not so well known as Steinway or Böesendorfer these days, the company was founded in Leipzig, Germany in 1853 (the same year that Steinway & Sons was founded in New York) and its pianos have a attracted a long list of high-profile admirers, including Arthur Rubinstein, The Beatles, Rachmaninov, and Queen Victoria". - Mark Wherry Sound On Sound Nov. 2007.

"A legendary old-world piano that was a favorite of composers such as Brahms, Bartok, Debussy, Liszt, and McCartney, the instrument sans room ambience, sans reverb, sans everything but what you’d hear if you stuck your head under the lid." - Richard Leiter Keyboard Magazine Nov. 2007.

"The thing that most sets this piano apart from the competition is its heavy reliance on Kontakt 2's convolution engine. In addition to room ambience and reverb, convolution is used to enhance sustain resonance and, most importantly, to change the timbre of the piano completely. A complete second set of instruments is included for use with a variable sustain pedal. A variable sustain pedal sends different values with increased pressure rather than simply acting as an on/off switch. It's a much more realistic piano-damper-pedal implementation." - Len Sasso  Electronic Musician November 2007

Garritan has announced that the Authorized Steinway Virtual Concert Grand Piano - Professional Edition, a software instrument developed in collaboration with Steinway & Sons, maker of some of the world's finest pianos, has started shipping and is available now.

The musical world has long acknowledged the Steinway piano as the benchmark for excellence in engineering and craftsmanship, and Steinway & Sons has recognized the need for a virtual Steinway piano that would come as close as technologically possible to the beauty and complexity of this legendary sound. Steinway & Sons was directly involved in the development of this virtual piano and chose Garritan to accomplish the extraordinary technical and artistic challenge in setting a new standard: a virtual concert grand piano with the unmistakable vibrancy and tone of a true Steinway Model D Concert Grand piano.

At the heart of the Authorized Steinway Virtual Concert Grand Piano sample library is the warmth and distinctive sound of the renowned Steinway Model D – overwhelmingly the "piano of choice" for the world's greatest performers. The Steinway concert grand piano chosen for this sample set is among Steinway's finest Model D's – newly voiced, regulated, and meticulously tuned by a master Steinway technician. The piano was hand-picked by Steinway & Sons and delivered for recording to one of the finest venues in the world, The Troy Music Hall.

The Professional version offers the most features of the superb Authorized Steinway Virtual Piano series and is ideal for professional studio and live use. It offers five different listening perspectives, including a player perspective from the bench, a classical recording perspective, an under-the-lid perspective, a stage perspective and a close audience perspective. The Standard version, which was recently released, offers two perspectives and a Basic version for students will be available soon.

Meeting Steinway's demanding standards in every aspect, the Garritan Authorized Steinway Virtual Concert Grand Piano uses unique technological innovations to provide "unequaled" realism -- flawless tuning, multiple listening perspectives, complete resonance modeling (both sustain resonance and sympathetic resonance), virtuosic pedaling (damper, una corda and sostenuto), soft pedal samples, multi-stage natural-sounding releases, adjustable-velocity actions, adjustable mechanical noises, historical tunings and Scala file import, MIDI playback and record in standalone, ambience reverb, 3 band EQ, proportional sustain pedaling, Graceful Copy Protection (no dongles or challenge response) and superb responsiveness and playability. This high-end user experience is rounded out with an aesthetically pleasing interface, with simple, user-friendly controls, and presented in beautifully elegant packaging.

"This was a very important project for Steinway & Sons," states Gary Green, Vice President Business Development and Customer Satisfaction. "We have long recognized the need for a Steinway sampled sound set that would best reflect the complex architectures of the Steinway sound. We also understand the importance of quality samples and their use by amateur music enthusiasts, as well as prominent producers, composers, recording studios and other venues. We were extremely fortunate to have Gary Garritan work with us on this technically and musically complex project. While both Steinway & Sons and Gary Garritan recognize that nothing can replace the actual Steinway piano, we are extremely delighted that there is now a sampling product that comes closest to capturing the distinctive Steinway sound that we are proud to endorse."

The Steinway concert grand piano chosen for the sample set is among Steinway's finest Model D's — newly voiced, regulated, and meticulously tuned by a master Steinway technician. Recording was done in one of the finest venues in the world, The Troy Music Hall.

Pianoteq is a high-class virtual instrument using breakthrough technology, available for PC and Mac (VST/AU/RTAS/stand-alone):

    • Responds in real time to pianist's interpretation

    • Sounds and behaves just like a real piano

    • Extraordinary playability and expressiveness

    • Advanced tuning, voicing and soundboard adjustment

    • Extremely small (15 MB) and fast loading

Pianoteq is issued from an academic research and results in what we call the fourth piano generation. This is the very first, and only, piano available that belongs to this generation.

      First generation: acoustic piano (1698)
      Second generation: electro-acoustic piano (1929)
      Third generation: sampled piano (1984)
      Fourth generation: modelled piano (2006)

The first generation of pianos began with Cristofori's pianoforte in 1698 which came to maturity at the end of the 19th century with the acoustic grand pianos. It was followed in the 20th century by the second generation electro-acoustic pianos and the third generation sampled pianos where each note is a recording of how it sounded during a specific moment in time, not taking into account the complexity of the instrument.

Pianoteq is the first and only piano belonging to the fourth generation, developed in order to go beyond the limitations of the third generation and to become a versatile and innovating tool. It is in fact the first virtual piano factory — it can produce new brands as well as copies of historical instruments.

Pianoteq is available for Windows XP/Vista and MacOS X 10.3.9 and up (Universal Binary).

"PIANOTEQ, in my opinion, stands head and shoulders above most of the other piano imitations. It was obviously created by people who really understand the amazing acoustic properties of pianos, including all of the important peripheral sounds (pedals, hammers, string resonances, etc..) that form the highly complex and beautiful sonorities that a piano can produce. Carefully crafted and clear and concise in its presentation, PIANOTEQ is a joy to use." - Miles Black Pianist/Producer

"It's hard to believe that such an impressive piano sound can come from a 15 MB software plug-in. It sounds far more vivid and realistic than the sample libraries I've tried. As a composer the next thing I did was of course to push the controls far beyond the natural limits. Very creative and wonderful for sound design! PIANOTEQ won't leave my computers hard disk anymore." - Michel van der Aa Composer

The "White Grand II" is heard on numerous recordings and are used on soundtracks from many movies and other media. When designing the "White Grand II" we chose to record two separate mic positions, close and medium ambience. Close miking was done with microphones placed close to the hammers/strings. The second piano sampled used two microphones in a position that's more normal for piano recordings and mixed that with the original microphones; this gave a bit more ambience and a slightly rounder tone but with all the characteristics that makes the "White Grand II" so Grand.
